We were delighted to be joined by Leah Robson, director of Your Energy Your Way, at our recent Sustainable You event in partnership with Climate Action Wandsworth.

There, she presented on domestic heat pumps and getting more women installers into the workforce.

In a recent interview with Independent, she addresses even more common questions.

Here are some key takeaways:

  1. Heat pumps are 3-5 times more energy efficient than gas boilers. Then they can be a dramatic way to cut the amount of power that your house uses.
  2. They keep your house at a constant temperature rather than the rise and fall we can see with traditional heating: whether it’s cold or hot outside, you can leave it running, and it will stabilise the temperature.
  3. For those worried about the sound, Nesta, the innovation charity, runs a “visit a heat pump” scheme where people can go and listen to both the sound of the heat pump as well as the experiences of their owners.
  4. At the moment services can be expensive because rareness of heat pumps means the skills workers required might be further away.
  5. But installation is not complicated: you find the spot, which is possible even in older houses built before central heating, get the equipment installed and then let it get to work.
