The year is 2040. Growing your own veg, active travel, renewable energy, more public benches than you can shake a stick at... What's your dream scenario? Toby joined Transition Town Tooting's 'Town Anywhere' event this week, where he time travelled to a futuristic town in the year 2040 to create the blueprint of our dreams. In this futuristic town called 'Anywhere', one thing's for certain: the people value community. What is Town Anywhere?‘Town Anywhere’ brings a wide cross-section of people together in person for one day to imagine, build and then inhabit a positive vision of how the place they share could develop in the future. First seeded and developed by artists Ruth Ben-Tovim and Lucy Neal at Transition Town Conferences over 10 years ago, the ‘Town Anywhere’ process has now been staged in towns and cities in the UK, worldwide and online. Our director, Toby, went along to the event hosted by Transition Town Tooting, where over 90 people headed to the Samaj Hall in Tooting for a morning of interactive, imaginative co-design. How does the event work? One of the most interactive parts was when we were split into pairs two write our ideas on blackboards, talking about your ideas with your partner. We described what we would want from a fictional town in 2040. What would make you happy? How would you want to live? We then joined with other groups to use these ideas to co-design a pathway to this future. What were your key takeaways?A few key themes stood out. We focused on health, green spaces, active travel. In this futuristic town called 'Anywhere', one thing's for certain: the people value community. Be it a communal garden or just with more benches – one of the things people flagged was that we don’t sit and chat. We have forgotten how to just slow down and have a natter! I left the event feeling empowered, because you are not alone. I was suddenly in a room of 50 people who thought and felt the same way as I did. It was apt, seeing as the event was hosted in the Patidar Samaj Hall, where CREW recently carried out an energy audit! Where can we find out more?Transition Town Tooting have posted a short write-up with some photos from the day. They've also promised a full report and video, so make sure you’re following them to get the latest. It’s a brilliant concept and certainly a conversation starter.
