CREW Energy was founded in 2014 as Community Renewable Energy Wandsworth (as long-time fans will know). Some members of Wandsworth Friends of the Earth were looking for a new project to take on, one that would go beyond environmental activism and allow us to take action ourselves. Seeing the success of Brixton Energy, we decided to take on the challenge of bringing community energy to Wandsworth! This Volunteers' Week (1-7 June 2020) we wanted to go back to our roots and say thank you to the dedicated volunteers that have made CREW what it is today. We began holding regular meetings at the Old Sergeant pub in Wandsworth Town. There we clubbed together to discuss ideas and scout out locations within the community where we could install low-carbon solutions, starting with our LED lighting project at the Doddington and Rollo Community Association. Fast-forward 6 years and we are bigger than ever, with over 21 shareholder members from across south-west London, 18 additional volunteer energy advisors, exponential growth in our bids won in 2019, a runner-up prize at the 2019 Community Energy England Awards and our very first share offer on the way this summer! This Volunteers’ Week, we wanted to go back to our roots and focus on the people that make all of this action possible: our volunteers! You may have seen our posts on social media, but in case you missed it, please enjoy this round up of just some of our members (the ones we could pin down!) and why they volunteered for CREW. See yourself in any of these quotes? Why not join the CREW?
