Katherine Low Settlement

Picture

Location: Battersea, Wandsworth
Asset owner: Katherine Low Settlement
Energy saved: ~24 tonnes CO2e per annum
Money saved: ~£9,848 per annum

Tech used:
  • Hydromx
  • Building management system
  • Air source heat pump

Collaborators and funders

We have been working with Katherine Low Settlement for a number of years, splitting the decarbonisation of their building across various phases in line with available funding.

This latest phase of the project was funded by the Wandsworth Council Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy / NCIL).

Technology used

Phase 1 (2021)

LED lighting
The replacement of the fluorescent lighting with LEDs was forecast to save 2.8 tonnes of carbon per year

Phase 2 (2025-26)

In 2025, our suppliers, Highcliff Mechanic, installed Hydromx heat transfer solution to make the heating system and radiators more efficient. This was followed by a building management system, and a heat pump system in the creche.

Combined, these technologies will save KLS a projected £9848.48 per annum on their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by 24.66 tonnes per year too!

The technology we are working to install will:
  • Allow the team to control the heating system on a granular level, only heating areas that are in use.
  • Heat the building quicker and reduce the amount of time heating needs to be on for while maintaining a steady temperature throughout the building.
  • Reduce reliance on the current gas boilers to help reduce emissions and improve air quality in the playground.

Additional benefits

Historically, CREW has hosted a number of energy advice sessions with Refugee clients at KLS. The interesting facet of this programme was that the clients were taught energy phraseology in the English lessons before our visits. These sessions back in 23/24 created a large number of leads for home energy visits.

In December 2025, our advisor Clare hosted another session with the elders, supporting them with their energy questions, including lots of useful tips, and helping them to explore any benefits and other services they may be entitled to. This led to 10 sign-ups for home energy visit.

About katherine Low Settlement

Katherine Low Settlement is a much-loved, busy charity that has been at the heart of the community since 1924. They work to reduce poverty and isolation and bring the community together. Their core programmes support older people, children, young people and their families from refugee backgrounds and newly-arrived adults learning English: over 500 people a week visit our building. They campaign for social change and partner with other charities and communities to help them to thrive in the wider community.

Parts of their building date back to the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, which presents a real challenge when it comes to retrofit and energy efficiency. It is made up of three buildings – each with its own boiler – covering 27 separate rooms.
