Welcome to the CREW Energy newsletter, your monthly round-up of community energy news and upcoming events - delivered right to your inbox!

Foodival for thought

Greetings new CREW subscribers! You may recognise this view from the Tooting Foodival, where we were dishing out energy advice alongside the delicious homegrown cuisine.

The event was a huge hit; the cider was flowing, the sun was out, and so were the mermaids (no, really). This alongside stalls manned by local vendors of handmade, sustainable goods, meant the sense of community was palpable.

We spoke to a huge number of you who were interested in saving energy, learning more about CREW and generally making the world a better, more sustainable place. So, thank you for your time, support and dedication to the cause. And… we hope you enjoy the updates we promised!

Tooting Foodival followed on from our energy cafe at Wimbledon Library the previous weekend, where we spoke to locals in need of advice on how to save cash and carbon. While a much less ‘sustainability-focused’ event on the whole, there’s always someone interested in what we’re doing and wanting to pop along for our next date. So, stay tuned!

Do you know of any venues that would be interested in running an energy cafe near you?

Climate Emergency Action Week

Climate Emergency day was on 20th September and CREW members were busy flying the community energy flag in London and New York.

Our member Sheila was at the UN Summit in New York, while Company Secretary Toby attended the 2019 IEMA Sustainability Impact Awards. We also headed down to see some of the Climate Strike in London, where locals were out in their thousands to show their solidarity and demand changes to how we as a society impact on our planet.

Thanks to Maureen for sharing the photo of CREW’s newest climate activist!
2019 Community Energy Awards

This month, Community Energy England is hosting the 2019 Community Energy Awards in London and CREW has been nominated for an award!

The Community Energy & Carbon Saving Award is for the community group which has undertaken the most inspiring energy conservation and/or management project. We’ve been shortlisted alongside Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-op, Carbon Coop and URBED. It’s sure to be a high-energy event - so grab a ticket here and we’ll see you there!

If you can’t make it but want to hear more, here’s a quick summary of our nomination:

CREW Energy has achieved a community energy first by installing a building management system as an innovative heat energy saving measure at Devas Club, a youth community centre in Wandsworth, South London, as well as an LED lighting scheme. The system is forecast to cut energy usage by 25%. These two measures will cut carbon by 11.72 tonnes per annum and save Devas £3,400 on their energy bills.
