One of the primary ways CREW Energy helps create the low carbon future we all want is by helping finance projects so they can take place today, not tomorrow, not in 2030.
Whether you've already got a developed project idea, or need our consultancy support to develop a scope and cost estimate, we can work with you to find an appropriate financing package that can enable your project. We finance projects through a mix of grants, private investment, community share offers and or low/zero interest loans specially available for these types of projects.
Grant Funding
We have significant success in identifying appropriate grant schemes, writing bids on behalf of partners and winning the funding that enables projects to proceed. Since summer 2018 CREW Energy has won 6 out of 7 funding bids, totalling more than £139,000, to deliver energy transformation projects and fuel poverty reduction energy cafes across London. Our funders include the Greater London Authority, Islington Council and UK Power Network (UKPN) and we are constantly finding new grant opportunities to benefits our partners.

Repayment (Loan) Financing
As part of the project scope development process, CREW Energy will build a financial pay-back model for the project scope to calculate the time required to recover the installation costs through savings on energy bills/energu generation income. This modelling allows us advise you on the opportunities and risks for financing the capital costs of the project via a loan which is repaid through monthly/annual energy savings. Ideally finding a balance that allows you to bank some of the immediate cost reduction/income generation benefits as well.
Loan financing is a good option when there are not suitable grants available, or you do not have the time way to wait for grant cycles, or the total value of the project is too big to grant fund. We will then work with you to find appropriate loan options that fit within the financial model.
For our first project at DRCA, we secured a £22k, 0% interest loan, from the British Airways Carbon Fund to pay for the installation of new LED lights. DRCA save on average £530 per a month from the efficient LED lighting, and repay £350 a month for in loan repayments, netting £180 in savings for the charity every month from day 1. Find out more about DRCA here.
Community Share Offer
Community share offers allows community ownership of sustainability projects. Once a fundraising target is set for a project, we advertise to the community inviting them to invest in the project for a share in the project which will repay interest every year and eventually pay the total investment. Each share offer is different, and developed based on the individual project.
Community Share offers are best suited to projects which:
- have a financial model that has a clear ability to pay a regular annual return to investors
- a significant fundraising target (usually greater than £50k), where other financing sources are suitable and the cost of administering the share offer is a small % of the total.
- where engaging the community with the opporunity to share ownership and leadership of the project is an additional project benefit/outcome
For more information on community share offers, visit the community shares wesbite.
There are some fantastic example of community share offers by some of our fellow Community Energy London cooperative friends:
- Lambeth Community Solar (still inviting investors)
- The Schools Energy Coop (next round opens later in October 2019)
- SELCE (Express interest in future offer to go live)
Alternative Funding Models
There are other routes available to funding your project, and CREW Energy is always happy to talk through the range of financing options available. If you have any questions, email us: [email protected]
