Polka Theatre

Picture

Locality: Wimbledon, Merton
Asset owner: Polka Theatre
Energy saved: 16.1 tonnes CO2e
Tech used:
  • Solar panels
  • Building management system
  • Hydromx
  • LED lighting

We are working with local children’s theatre and local landmark, Polka Theatre, to improve the sustainability of their much-loved building. We will begin installing the energy-saving measures below in the first week of June 2022.

The theatre has been going through a major rebuild over the last couple of years. These improvements extend its facilities and its offering to the children of London. We have partnered with Polka to help them upgrade some of the facilities in the main auditorium and its surrounding space.

The technologies we will be supporting them with include:
  • Solar panels on the roof: this will save 7.2 tonnes CO2e per annum.
  • Building management system and Hydromx: to allow the theatre to not only zone its heating, but also control when it is switched on by monitoring outside temperatures and space usage. The heat transfer solution, called Hydromx, will improve the efficiency of the heating system by 20-30%. These two heating efficiency measures will save a combined total of 8.4 tonnes CO2e per annum.
  • LED lighting: this will improve the efficiency of the lighting in the hallways and meeting spaces and save 0.5 tonnes CO2e per annum.

About Polka Theatre
The Polka Theatre is a renowned and much-loved children’s theatre that was established on Wimbledon Broadway 40 years ago. It has been a vital resource to our community ever since, and we are sure many of you will have visited either with your children or grandchildren or even as children yourselves.

Their state-of-the-art building is a vibrant hub for future generations, right at the heart of our community. Designed by architects Foster Wilson Size, the building is both a centre for play and a world-class theatre facility, empowering children to navigate their world through inspirational theatre and creative experiences.
