Islington sea cadets

Picture
Locality: Islington, London
Asset owner: Islington and Stoke Newington Sea Cadet Unit
Energy saved: 2.13 tonnes of CO2e per annum
Money saved: £1,532 per annum
Tech used: solar panels and battery storage

The Islington Sea Cadets and CREW Energy collaborated on an innovative project to generate both renewable electricity and heat at the recently re-opened Islington Cadet Unit near Essex Road Station.

In summer 2019 The Islington and Stoke Newington Sea Cadet Unit and CREW Energy won a funding grant from the Islington council's Community Energy Fund to transform the unit's building. The project installed solar panels and battery storage. The transformation helped the unit avoid a connection to the gas grid and save the charity a forecast 66,000 kWh, 19 tonnes of C02e and around £10,000 per year. CREW will also run educational activities with the cadets to introduce them to key issues around sustainability and energy efficiency.

The project was installed over Autumn/Winter 2019.

About The Islington Sea Cadets
The Islington Sea Cadets are part of a wider unit with Stoke Newington. The Islington unit will open to new cadets from autumn 2019 following a temporary closure to the unit building for repair works. The Cadets aim to give young people an experience that will help them grow into the person they want to be in a safe and friendly environment. Through various activities and adventures, cadets learn teamwork, respect, loyalty, self-confidence, commitment, self-discipline, honesty and how to be the best version of themselves.

They offer a range of different activities from sailing, windsurfing and powerboating - to rock climbing, camping, and music - plus, so much more! At Islington and Stoke Newington young people are also able to gain different qualifications that they can take with them once they leave Sea Cadets.
